Very showy with stiff branches that descend downward and skirt the main stem. Dark purple foliage lasts into summer giving a dramatic impact in the landscape. Grows best in the sun.

Purplish-pink flowers attract many early-season pollinators looking for nectar and pollen. Flowering occurs before the leaves emerge and are followed by brown seed pods that look like pea pods.
