Sabal minor

Sabal Palm (Dwarf Palmetto)

This slow-growing, native palm grows 2'-10' in height. The blue-green leaves lack ribs and are shaped like a fan. Flowers are fragrant and appear in summer, attracting pollinators. Blue-black fruits are eaten by robins, raccoons, and many other birds and mammals.

It is naturally found in maritime forests, swamps, floodplains, and occasionally on drier sites. It is somewhat drought tolerant once established and is moderately salt tolerant. This plant is seldom damaged by deer.

Sabal palm does well as a specimen, in understory plantings and provides a tropical look for foundation plantings.
